The Static Shock Experiment

The Static Shock Experiment

Halloween is the perfect time for a little hair-raising fun — literally! Try this static electricity experiment with your child:

You’ll Need:

  • A balloon 🎈

  • A clean, dry head of hair

Steps:

  1. Blow up the balloon and tie it.

  2. Rub it against your child’s hair for 10–15 seconds.

  3. Watch as their hair lifts toward the balloon like spooky strands floating in the air!

The Science:
Rubbing transfers electrons, creating static electricity. That charge makes hair strands repel each other and stick to the balloon.
