Redefining Fatherhood

Redefining Fatherhood

Fatherhood

The roles of dads evolve and change as children age and change.  Father-child relationships also change as children and dads grow and mature.  There is no one right way to be a good father and great parenting can look very different from one man to the next.  However, when fathers are present, it can make a difference in children's lives in many ways.  Being present, offering support, and showing affection for kids is important to the nurturing of young children and will help them thrive in life.  Sadly, black fathers are often presented in a negative manner in mainstream media; so the charge is on us!  It’s important to uplift and support black fathers and father figures who are actively involved in nurturing and supporting their children's growth and development.  These men have made a huge impact in my life:

#DadsDoHairToo

Fatherhood isn’t what it used to be, and it’s all the better for it.  Fathers have evolved to play different roles to include caring for their children's hair. For a little girl to have her father’s participation and approval on her hairstyle can promote confidence and self-expression as hairstyles have historically been an important expression of personal style in Black culture.  These styling moments can also create the opportunities for fathers to bond with their daughters or to have tough conversations.

#DadsDoHairToo is an adorable place to check out on Instagram. The hashtag has captured thousands of pictures of fathers styling their daughters' hair into all kinds of unique hairstyles.  Here are a few ShampooTime dads who are redefining fatherhood:
