Today we’d like to introduce you to Kia-Shun Voltz.
Kia-Shun, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
ShampooTime started with my daughter Karter Sylest (@Karter_sylest_ on IG), who has a head full of hair, always has since she was born. When she turned one-year-old, I was in so much pain leaning over the bathtub trying to wash her hair. My knees and back would ache, plus she hated the water/shampoo running down her face. When I decided I needed a better way to shampoo her hair, I started shampooing her hair on the kitchen sink (she was about 18 months) with rolled-up towels. I would struggle with her wanting to hold her head up. At the end of the washdays, there were several wet towels, a cranky toddler, and one tired momma.
In January of this year, I was sitting at my desk at work and a voice spoke to me that told me to “do it and just do it now.” After work that day, I went to Karter’s gymnastics class and this, when I had the thought that was I needed was a gymnastics mat, but smaller to fit on the counter. The next day, and six days after that, the first picture I saw when I logged on to Instagram, I saw a picture of another mother/daughter washday that looked exactly like our washdays. Rolled up towels and a toddler struggling to hold their phone while they get their hair shampooed, which made me realize there was a market for the idea I had in mind. I created a prototype and tweaked it a few times until I settled on the design for what is called the “original shampoo mat.”
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s amazing how things have aligned for ShampooTime. I’ve been putting in the work and things have been falling right into place. It hasn’t been a smooth road, with covid-19 putting a damper on 2020 in many different ways, its been hard trying to find a manufacturer. Every business is making protective gear for doctor’s offices and hospitals etc. It’s also been hard trying to figure out the “do’s and don’ts” of being an entrepreneur and starting a business from scratch.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the ShampooTime story. Tell us more about the business.
Introducing ShampooTime, the shampoo mat solution that reinvents your wash day experience, by turning any kitchen sink into a comfortable shampoo bowl. Unlike other products, this shampoo mat supports your child’s neck, back and doesn’t confine their head to a small space. Instead, this mat allows your child’s head to move freely and is designed to ensure the water rolls back into the sink to avoid getting shampoo and water in their face, eyes and ears. But the best part about it, simply attach your smart device to the entertainment bar, turn on your child’s favorite show, and shampoo their hair in peace. Say goodbye to tears, complaining, backaches, achy knees, and say hello to happiness and peace.
Even with the need for a product like this, it’s amazing that up until the last couple of years, there was no product on the market to help make washdays at home more comfortable. Even now, there are only a handful of products on the market. What makes ShampooTime so unique is that there is no other product on the market like our shampoo mat, that’s what sets our mats apart from any other product.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
With no other companies currently creating anything like our shampoo mat, I can imagine that some competition will arise within the next year or so. Our shampoo mat is patent pending.
